Christian Instruction

Martin Luther was dismayed at the lack of basic Christian education among the common parishioners during a visit to Saxony in 1528. These events constrained him “to prepare this brief and simple catechism or statement of Christian teaching.”  The Small Catechism contains standard educational materials that parents and pastors might use to teach the young.  Luther also prepared a Large Catechism with more detail, including polemics on church doctrines and other information for pastors and church leaders.

In his preface to the Catechism, Luther wrote,

“Although we cannot and should not compel anyone to believe, we should nevertheless insist that the people learn to know how to distinguish between right and wrong according to the standards of those among whom they live and make their livings.”
